The way they build cars these days, I don't think it's worth it, and I live is a pretty crappy climate most of the time.
I've never had a car less then 10 years old rust out on me. I'd save your money IMO

Huge waste of money dude, don't bother. I tell people the same thing when they buy a new car and F&I try to get you on all the extras.
Unless you plan to keep the car for the next 20 years, and it sees a LOT of salt you're better off not messing with it. |

Not a common problem afaik.
But... I know that sometimes water, salt etc can get in behind the wheel liner and start to rust if it has some loose, or isn't making a good seal. I would check to see if everything looks good there. If it's not rusted thru you should be able to fix it fairly easily. If it is, well I'm not sure what 53 reg means, but if it's under warranty, it is covered for perforation, meaning rust right thru.

Like Bricktop says, if you're getting too much moisture in behind the liner, it can rust out, you need to be sure to get in there and clean it out often. You should stop by your dealer though, the liner shouldn't be compromised, and if it is, it should be replaced. I've seen it happen once or twice, but it is not common at all, AFAIK

Hmm well the rust seems to be starting under the paint on the outer side, rather that from the side near the liner. It's only 4 years old so I was surprised to find it rusting already. I've told the Mazda dealer, so I shall see what they can do about it! Cheers for the advice!

Hmm, not the liner then, but something must have hit it, a rock or something, since it is very unusual to have it start rusting for no reason.
I hope they fix it up for you, once rust starts it has a bad habit of spreading |

Yep I really hope they fix it before it gets to a stage where it's unrepairable, It's from the top of the wheel arch stretching down towards the front on both rear arches so it's unlikely to be something hitting it in the same place on both sides. I suspect it's faulty manufacturing or something.

Ya. the odds of that are pretty slim. I think you have a decent case for them to repair it.
Thing is though, that the odds of a mfg problem are pretty slim too. Did you buy your car new? could it have been damaged prior to delievery and the dealer already fixed it once by painting it? That happens more times then you would think, something happens to the car in transit, the dealer gets it and repairs it, since it's not titled, they don't have to say anything, and they sell it to you as new, but then problems such as this show up down the road.

There is a recall on this now in GB. A lot of 6s are rusting out on the rear wheel arches for some reason. Have a look here......

I'm taking my 6 to my local mazda dealer next monday to get my rusty arches fixed! Anyone know mazdas policy on courtesy cars... I want a car but I cant see anywhere on my insurance that says I'm covered for courtesy cars; I suppose as it's being fixed under warranty, they might cover the courtest car themselves but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

Courtesy cars are at the dealers discretion, if you have a good dealer, they should set you up. I've never been left with out transport with any dealer/mfg I've ever dealt with. It's a small cost for good customer service.

It wasnt the new one... it was an '06 but it looked like a Demio. Very high sides, sloppy gears, weak brakes and skinny wheels not to mention a driving position like a bus and rubbish seats; it looked like I'd nicked it off postman pat! I've got my 6 back now, so I'm all happy!
