Well, I posted this over at mazda6club, but I also wanna post it here and see what kind of responses I get here. Okay, so I was at my high school graduation last Sunday. I left my windows all up, sunroof closed, since it was not that warm out. Well three hours later when I get out of my graduation, it's a lot warmer. So I open my car, and everything is just scorching. The steering wheel was so hot it was hard to steer since I didn't want to touch it. Anyways, I look at my windshield, and I got a crack! Now it was not there before graduation, it appeared during. So I am thinking that the heat caused it to crack? I have no idea since you cannot feel the crack from the outside surface, or inside surface; it's like in between the glass. If anyone knows what may have caused this, and what I should do about it please feel free to share ideas/past experiences. I went to the dealer already and have to wait till Monday so the service manager can talk to the rep who is on vacation till Monday. Anyways, everyday that I wake up and it is really hot outside, I go into my car and its burning up in there. And sure enough, the crack is getting longer.
![]() P.S. Sorry that is is so long hehe ![]() |

Congrats on the graduation!
The windshield should be a two piece laminate, so you should be able to feel the crack one side or the other if you take something sharp and rub it back and forth over it.. either way it's there. The only time I've seen windshields crack for no reason is when it's really cold out, and you crank the heater, since the temp diferential can make it crack. It's odd that in the middle of summer that would happen. Based on that, I would guess you have the smallest of the small chip somewhere that prompted it to start cracking when it got hot. but..if you're searched and didn't find anything, the dealer probably won't find anything either, and they should replace it for you.. I had an accord once that happened to and they replaced it for me at no cost, but it took a bit of yelling/begging to convince them, no one likes giving things away for free ![]() When you go back to the dealer, just convince yourself before you get there that the windshield had a weakness that let go in the heat, and that this defect should be thier responisbility.

I had this happen to me as well.. I left my car sealed up for the day, and it was scorching out, came back and saw that my windshield was cracked.
I don't know if it's a problem, or just the odd weak windshield. I took it to the dealer and they inspected it and replaced it for me with out a problem. |

One of my cars had one start on the left, and I watched it work it's way across to the right for about a month.
I took it to the dealer and he rubbed a pen over it, then goes.. ahh ya, you feel that little divot? it was a stone chip, the heat just set it off.. so insurance is going to get my business.. the crack started below the weatherstripping, so how exactly did it start with a stone chip?? pissed me off |

Yeah, the dealer found no signs of stone chipping so that's why they "say" they are pulling for me to get it replaced for free. But then they go, well your suspension has changed so that could have caused it, which I said was BS since I changed my springs over a year ago. Anyways, the dealer is suppose to call me Monday and I will post an update then.
Johnny - Thanks on the congratz! ![]() |

Never had a problem with mine.. but I've seen it happen..
The thing about your suspension is they may think that it is causing too much shock on the body, but that's a big stretch. If you wailed it off a curb maybe. |

Hopefully it worked out for you..dealers are famous for trying to get out of this sort of stuff. If there is no chip, then it was weak and failed and has nothing to do with you.
It looks that way based on your pic. Good luck

Yeah, the dealer hasn't called me back yet. So I will try tomorrow, and bug them on the 4th if they are even open.
Johnny Drama - I did finally figure out what side the crack is on. The other day, it got longer so I took a pen and went back and forth across it on the inside and I could feel the crack there. It's weird, because I can't feel the crack on the first 6 inches of it... EDIT: The dealer just called me and said that the rep won't change it because he feels that the suspension is what triggered the crack because my car is not even two years old yet! The manager I talked to has no clue about it, he is just going with what the rep told him. He said that the rep was like suspension would make it stiffer and cause it to crack within the first few months to a year, but I told him that it has been 15 months so how is that possible. Oh well, I am just going to go through insurance now. Last edited by RJB_M6 : 07-03-2007 at 05:00 PM. |

That's crap man.. sorry they're not going to bat for you.
We both know that it didn't crack because of the suspension, hell they ship cars with spring spacers, which make the suspension 10 times stiffer then your suspension ever could. One of my cars has a full race suspension, which I track the crap out of, and in 7 years it hasn't cracked the windshield, and I hit more pot holes then I like. Probably not worth the fight though ![]() |
