Default Temperature gauge gone mad

I have a Mada Xedos 6 2l V6. Whilst driving home yesterday, the temperature gauge on the dashboard suddenly went into the red and stayed. I pulled over asap and put in approx 1 litre of water in the dark. Gauge went down and I carried on. Bit later the heater didn't work and then came hot again after a few miles. Just as I got home, 100miles later, Temp gauge went up again. No obvious water leaks under the car. In daylight I have checked and the coolant level is fine, as is the fuse for the cooling fan! I would be grateful for any suggestions and if it is likely to be a dodgy thermostat, can someone tell me where it is. Many thanks

I'd say it's most likely the thermostat. That is the cap that is on the top of the radiator. Cheap part, hard to test, so I'd just replace it and see if that solves the problem.

Like Sofast says, that should solve your problem. Same thing happened to me.

I had a similar problem on another car, turned out to be a loose connection to the gauge and it just read what ever it felt like. In a way it was nice to know the engine was working fine. But it was a pita to fix, since it was hard to get to the gauge.
