Default P5 Wheel corrosion

Hi,

I have a Protege 5 and my wheels are badly corroded as you can see in the pic. I don't know why they are going so bad, is this typical?

Thanks

I've heard of this happening quite often. I can't say for sure but I've heard Mazda will actually replace some wheels, if they are show to be defective.

Wow, that doesn't look good at all.

I've heard the same thing as Carl, have you gone the dealer to see what they say?

My sisters looked exactly the same. She took it to the dealer and bitched ( which she's good at ) and they replaced all 4 of them for her. The rusting from the inside was actually ruining the integrity of the rim, and it was a safety concern as well as looking like ass

Ya, that doesn't look good. Did anything hit the rim to start that rust, or did it just start under the paint?

my old car was like that and I took it back and complained. Funny that only 3 of the 4 wheels looked like that, the other one was perfect

The rims on my MS3 started to go like that. Showed the dealer, they ordered me new ones and took mine back. So far the new ones look perfect.

Mine are fine, but I've seen a few go bad. You'd think they'd figure this out after the Protege ones.

I can't say for sure, but Mazda has been pretty good about replacing them. 2nd hand shouldn't matter, especially if you bought it form a dealer.

At some point, IMO, it goes from being an asthetic problem to a safety issue, so I wouldn't stand for it myself.

How long have you had the car? I would be sure to bring up that fact that they should have taken care of it before you took delivery.

I bought the car in march i think... but didnt think it was a major problem just thought it was asthetic. but if its a safety issue then i'll pop in and see them. although when i bought the car a month later the boot started to leak and they wouldnt replace that as it was past the 3year warranty period but i guess you can only try and see what they say. i'll keep you posted on what the say/do about it.

Sounds like your dealer isnt too keen on going out of thier way for you, so the rims might be a tough one, but I know that many have had thiers replaced even after years. It's no secret to Mazda that something was wrong with them. If they say no, don't give up, try another dealer or see if you can speak with the area supervisor ( DSM )

Hi Craig . my car was over 3 years old and mazda offered to change my wheels if i paid 30% of the cost. i had them replaced already so i won't be paying 30% this time.
UPDATE --i have contacted mazda again and they have reversed thier dicision and i had the new wheels fitted last week. my car will be 4 years old come january so don't lie down KEEP ASKING. sorry for the delay

Do you live in the Uk?? Called my dealer and finally got through to speak to the person i wanted after 6 calls.... as he was already in a call or in a meeting... and he said as the 3 warranty has run out its not covered and that they wont replace them as mazda havent recalled them, even though he admited they are unsafe when corroded. So i think i'll be taking it further up the ladder and see what happens.

My apologies that I haven't been back to this thread.

Even with my car being much older, I took it to the dealership and they agreed there was a defect and offered to replace them for me if I paid 25% which in my mind was a good deal, seeing as I got brand new rims.

I am in the US though, but I can't see how it would differ much in the UK, the cars all come from one factory.

Hope that helps.

And thanks for your replies as well
