Default Question about misfires

I've had my car for about 4 months and it's been fine. now in the last 2 weeks I keep getting a cel and it's a missfire. no one can figure out why it's happening.

any ideas?

Thanks

A friend had a random misfire at idle on his STi. Turns out when he had a recent compression and leakdown test, the person working on the car didn't properly tighten a ground bolt for his coilpacks.

Check for anything that looks out of the ordinary. Check the code to try to narrow it down to one cylinder and look at that one. If you can't pull the info from the codes, try to look at the spark plugs to figure out where the problem is occurring.

I would have said the same thing, ok, I will say the same thing. It's almost always the coil packs that cause the problem.

If you can't read it, the dealer should be able to tell you what cyllinder it was that caused the code, 10 bucks says a replacement will fix the problem.

I had the same problem dude.. faulty coil pack on #2 cyllinder.

Should be really easy to find and diagnose though. Did your dealer already check that? sometimes they fire, sometimes they don't. Maybe when they tested it was fine, but then craps out once you leave?

Thanks for the help. They never mentioned anything about coil packs, those are the things on top of the cylinder that makes the spark right?

This weekend I am taking it in again. I will tell them to check on this.

Thanks guys, you were right, the cel went off again luckily as I was heading to the dealership, and they saw a misfire on cylinder 3. So they replaced the coil pack, I guess, I think they called it something else. But I hope this has it.

Appreciate the info.

Is this a common problem on the Mazda3's?

I think it's fairly common, in asking around, it seems a lot of people have this problem

Ya, but it is on most cars. Coil packs go, just the nature of them. I have a friend that went through about 6 is 4 months!

Freakin coil packs, I'm so sick of replacing them, on 2 of my cars! they need to re-engineer these things.
