Default Brake wear

I have a 2005 and have replaced the rear pads (only 33,000 km)...the fronts were almost like new. Has anyone experienced the same? Why would the rears wear faster than the fronts? Is this something unique to Mazda? Has anyone heard of Mazda issuing a service bulletin?

That is pretty much backwards to everything I have ever seen. If the rears are wearing much faster then the fronts, I'd imagine there is a problem with your parking brake that is making the pads keep contact with the rotor, however slight.

You should be at a twp to one ratio front to rear.

Are you sure that your fronts weren't replaced at a dealer service and you forgot? hehe had to ask

Smile Brake wear

Thx Rod,
Positive the fronts weren't replaced without my knowing...unless the brake pad fairy came in the middle of the night!

I have noticed a few other M3s on the road with more brake dust on the rears vs the front! Is this a coincidence? I thought maybe Mazda did something strange with the brake setup.

The parking brake is fine.

Are you aware of any service bulletins?

I believe Mindcore keeps this up to date, and I don't seen anything in there.

I wear my fronts more then my rears.

I'm not aware of any service bulletins, but oddly I'm going to the dealer tomorrow, I'll ask them and see what they say.

I'm basing this off my MS3 obviously, but I don't see why it would be different. Would they be using a different compound? That wouldn't make sense.

Obviously, if you have a problem, it's real, and in that case it would appear that the brake bias is more towards the rear then the front, which is not the way it's supposed to be, the majority of your braking force should come from the front wheels.

Hmmm I've never actually looked, but I wonder if the master cylinder has a compartment for front and rear, and perhaps the front is low, in which case more pressure is applied to the rear?

I should take a look, unless someone knows for sure.

Thumbs up Brake Wear

Just for fun I serviced the fronts - lubricated the sliders etc. and then flushed the lines (all 4) and (obviously) changed the fluid. The car seems to brake in a more normal fashion i.e. the front end 'dives' under heavy braking...time will tell.

Interesting, let us know if the brake service helped. Mine wear fairly evenly front to back which I found odd. Maybe mine isn't as bad as yours, but doesn't strike me as normal

Default Brake Wear

I have been paying more attention to all the M3s I pass on the road and I would say that almost half of them have more brake wear on the rears than the fronts. Obviously there is a problem with the proprtioning valve or some other component. The brakes continue to function otherwise there would be a recall. The fact that so many cars are experiencing this problem, I am surprised that Mazda has not issued a TSB.

...time will tell.

Time definitely will... I'm at the dealer tomorrow I'm going to poke my nose around and see what I can find out.

Michael, Same thing happens to me. I've asked a couple times what the deal is, and they keep telling me it's normal. I don't really know the cause, and it brakes just fine as it is, so I'm not too concerned about it. I asked them if the brake compound was different, thinking maybe the rears were just softer and they just said they didnt know.

But.. the did say that it happens on some, but not all.

Not really helpful, but at least you're not alone.

Default Brake Wear

I actually called 2 different dealers and neither one was aware of any TSB, nor where they concerned about pre-mature wear. They both described this as normal wear even though it is not normal to have the rears working more than the fronts...maybe somebody has been driving with the e-brake on was suggested by one!

As you said, the car stops fine. As a matter of fact, I think it stops better now that I serviced fronts and rears and flushed with new fluid.

I wonder if Mazda is using Ford technology in their braking system?

Thanks for everybody's feedback. If you hear of anything please pass it on.

Enjoy!

I wouldn't doubt that Mazda uses Ford tech for brakes, but I can't recall every hearing anything weird like this with Fords..

I'll let you know if I hear anything, and likewise if you ever figure it out, lemme know!
