Let me start this out by saying I rock Mobil1 in my MX-5 all day long, I think its great stuff... for a piston-based engine.

For a rotary, I disagree, since the rotary engine is designed to burn the engine oil as part of its regular operation, and most big-name synthetic oils are designed not to burn. Due to the increased heat in a rotary engine, some brands will burn, but they can leave an ash-like coating on the housings, which can eventually build up and cause problems.

Now, there are some synthetics specifically designed for the rotary (I believe royal purple has a variant), but they are usually very hard to find, and when you do find them, are extremely cost prohibitive.

Before I made the switch to Mobil1 for my MX-5, I usually used Castrol GTX.

In the RX-7 (also a rotary, very similar to the RX-8) we're currently using store-brand cheapo stuff, as we didn't know if the thing would even fire up... soon as its time to top it up, I plan on switching over to the Castrol.

Mobil 1 probably is the best out there, but not ideal for rotaries.. I too use Castrol GTX. If you check once in a while, you can buy it cheap at walmart

I have been using Pennzoil 5W-20, with no issue for over 3 years now. Some use 5W-30.
