Hello, first time on. Purchased an 1987 rx7 turbo. My question, the turbo psi goes up slightly when you rev it hard, the last owner told me a mechanic said it's because the turbo is plugged, some small hole in it where the coolant goes is plugged, just wondering if any one has heard of this, or is there another reason.
thanks bundy |

Actually, I think I know what he's talking about, one of the oil lines might be plugged which is affecting the boost pressure.
I would just pull all the plumbing out one by one and clean it up, it would take an afternoon, but you could rest assured everything was all cleaned up.. no doubt needed it anyway even it that doesn't solve the problem. Likewise like Rage said, could very well be your BOV as well |

I'm guessing by that post that you aren't too familiar with what a turbo is, So I would suggest taking the car to a shop in your area that could help you...
however, if you still demand to learn from your own mistakes like myself... the "filter" you took off was just the intercooler. If you followed the tubes attaching it, you would have found the turbo, which would look similar to this: ![]() It will be mounted to a manifold on the passenger side of the engine, hooked up to both the intake box/filter, and the exhaust manifold. Another outlet would hook it up to the "filter" you looked at, which sounds to me like the top mounted intercooler. If you still want to be able to work on it by yourself, before going further, I suggest reading Corky Bell's "Maximum Boost" (I found it in the automotive section at barnes+nobles)... not only will it teach you more than you ever wanted to know about turbocharging ANYTHING... it has a lot of good info on basic engine design for both EFI and carbeurated setups alike.
