Post Tom

Hey folks, I'm new to the site but am an avid RX7 fan with 3 of them: '85, 91 convertible, and '94. Colors? Red, White, and Blue (no kidding!) The '85 is in storage currently but I'm hoping to bring it out of mothballs in the spring to restore it. First step will be a motor. 12A, but I wish it were a 13B. GSL, and I understand it is a nightmare to convert. Thanks for your interest!

Hi Tom. Welcome. Northern Kentucky huh. I was in your area a while back... had lunch at a great restaurant overlooking the river..I think it was near the "McDonald's Arches" bridge.
Post up some pictures of your cars....please. It's winter around here, my car's put away and I'm bored.

I'd go 13b, but the 12a can be fun.

You're not going to believe this, but I don't have any pictures of all of them together.....or even any of them individually. I'll work on that! I'm sending the convertible to Mazda this week to get the electric window motors replaced in the doors. I'm not very camera savvy, but I'll "get er done".

Does anyone know how difficult it really is to put a 13B into an '85 GSL replacing a 12A?

It's more then a direct drop in, but it's not the hardest swap out there. If you have the patience, then I'd reccomend it in a second.

Don't know much about the FB and FCs, I'm thinking you'll need new engine managment. Is this going to be a 13b from a GSL-SE or from a 2nd Gen.? Guessing that the former would be easier to mate up to the existing driveline and motor mounts might be easier.

a first gen, would be far easier, but you're right, you'll need new engine management, I'd just go with an AEM or something and be done with it.

What is an AEM? Something like advanced engine management? Where would I find the "paint by numbers" manual for doing a swap like this? How much more difficult would it be if I bought a reconditioned/rebuilt 13B for a first gen RX7? I think the pix will have to wait until spring; nasty weather here in N Ky!

Not familiar with them, but I believe AEM is the name of a company that makes aftermarket engine management systems.
I was hoping maybe someone more familiar with the 1st Gens would chime in, but my thinking in the earlier post was that since MAZDA put a FI 13b in the 1st Gen. GSL-SE models, that would be the easiest way to get one transplanted into your 1st gen....since the rest of the driveline, engine mounts and other issues would mostly be solved already. The only problem is that they were pretty rare. While a 2nd gen. 13b RE would be easier to find and purchase, I suspect it would be a more difficult swap.

AEM is a manufacture of Engine Management systems.. but I've heard that acronym used as any type of management system, incorrectly imo.

I agree with signal, you have two issues ahead of you, availability of an easier to swap engine, or ease reliabilty, but much more work to swap it.

I'm not sure if I have the patience for either, at least today

+1. As I became an old fossil I started liking things pre-engineered. Don't have the energy level or skills anymore, but admire those who do.
