The IRL had 7 cars at Barber Motorsports Park this past Friday, doing a test day. It was really cool to see the cars in person, they are so loud, and so very fast. They were averaging a lap time of about 1:10, on a 2.4 mile course. That is really fast. Unfortunately, just as we got there, Danica's car had mechanical failure on the front straight, so, I did not get any pictures of her on track. There are a couple of her car in the paddock, and one paparazzi looking shot of her. So, here are some of the pictures, I have some more, and will go through them later.

the IRL cars were there on Friday, it gave me an excuse to go over a little early. We were on track Saturday and Sunday. The track did feel a like it had a little more grip on Saturday morning, with the IRL rubber down. They were a treat to watch.
Thanks about the pics, I am learning, I was trying some new setting this weekend, the lighting was not great for where I was shooting, and due to construction at the track, I could not get to the best places to shoot at the time of day we were there. So, i did what I could. |

we just got lucky to see these cars run, had we not been going to BMP already, I would not have paid to go watch them, especially since they had only one viewing area to watch from. And not a fast section, not a cool section, just a kinda ho-hum section to watch IRL cars. Driving that section was not so ho-hum, but watching kinda is.
And about Danica, in pictures, and on TV, she looks pretty good IMO, and in person, she looks better. She is not up there in the top 5 or anything, but she looks better in person, in street clothes. She is short too, tiny really. In Print, she does not come across as being as tiny as she is, but if she is 5'2" she is pushing it. She certainly did have the attention of everyone there, the other drivers went completely un-noticed, everyone wanted to see Danica...including me...hell, my wife even wanted me to take her picture. |

but a couple candids were ok, she has a certain amount of respect for women who can drive race cars, especially really damn fast ones. because by her own admission, a lot of women are lousy drivers. and thanks, I keep working on the picture taking, doing motorsports is a whole lot different than what I am used to, and it has been a fun learning process. digital makes it possible, I would not be able to afford it if I had to pay for processing on all of them. for each decent picture, there are 50-60 crappy ones, and for what I would call a really good picture, there are 20 decent ones.

Great pics,
I get what you're saying about for every good one there are more then a few bad ones. Same thing happens to me. Once in a while I'll take a shot that I'll think this should be in a magazine, mostly though they look like they were taken by my 4 year old cousin ![]() Most have been cool to be up close with those cars though |

it was pretty cool to see these cars, and be up close to them. I was surprised at how small a diameter the wheels were, they are only about 12-13 inches i would guess. but they were wide as hell.
and just how loud, these cars are, and the rumble when they are at idle, or coming into the pits, on TV, they seem so shrill, and high pitched, but no so much in person. I did enjoy it, and if IRL does make BMP a stop on the 2008 schedule, I will no doubt be there. camera in hand of course. |
